Tips for Staying Focused and Saving Money at the Grocery Store

GroceriesThe other night my husband went to the grocery store to buy a $5 jug of water and he came home with a 24-pack of Miller Lite, brats, buns, two liters of soda, and a can of baked beans.

In his defense, it was a good special. Buy the beer for $14.99 and get all the other stuff for free. The special was advertised next to the registers, with the beer and all the “free” items conveniently placed right beside it.

This got me thinking. Are these deals really worth it if they cause you to spend money you otherwise wouldn’t have? Do you have trouble staying focused in the grocery store? I know I do.

I started looking in to this more and here are some tips I found for staying focused in the grocery store.

  • Never shop hungry. Shopping on an empty stomach leads to a cartful of stuff you don’t need.
  • Make a list—and keep it in sight. It’s the best way to avoid being tempted by unhealthy foods and sale items.
  • Shop the perimeters first. This is where you’ll find fresh produce, dairy, eggs, meat, and poultry. The center aisles feature packaged goods and junk food, so keep your list front and center.
  • Be careful with coupons. Clip only the ones for products you would ordinarily purchase. Don’t use coupons for junk food!
  • Stoop and bend. Smart merchants place the most profitable items at eye level and on end-caps. Look around for the best values.
  • Cook from scratch. Making meals from scratch is probably the best way to save on food. The more prepared the food, the more it costs.
  • Shop alone. Kids and spouses might try to influence you into impulse buys.
  • Always overcook: then freeze. This allows you the time you need to to cook from scratch.
  • Make your own salad dressing. Mix 1/2 cup of vinegar, 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt, 1/4 teaspoon of pepper, 1/2 teaspoon of dry mustard, 1 minced garlic clove and 1 cup of salad oil.
  • Grow your own! Next time you buy fresh garlic, save the four inner cloves. Plant them about 1/2 inch deep. In less than six months, you’ll have garlic! There are many other herbs and vegetables that you can grow yourself.
